How Trauma Can Create a Saddle Nose Deformity

Saddle nose deformity is a condition characterized by a noticeable collapse or depression in the bridge of the nose. It often results from trauma that compromises the structural integrity of the nasal framework. Dr. Maurice Khosh, a leading facial plastic surgeon in NYC, specializes in saddle nose repair, helping patients restore both the form and function of their nose.

Common Causes of Saddle Nose Deformity

Trauma is one of the leading causes of saddle nose deformity. Various types of injuries can contribute to the weakening of nasal structures, leading to the characteristic concave appearance. Some of the most common sources of trauma include:

  • Auto Accidents: High-impact collisions often result in facial trauma, including fractures or cartilage damage to the nose. The force of the impact can disrupt the nasal septum, leading to a collapse over time.
  • Contact Sports: Athletes participating in sports such as boxing, football, or wrestling are at an increased risk of nasal injuries. Repeated blows to the face can weaken the cartilage and bone, contributing to the development of a saddle nose deformity.
  • Falls: Accidental falls, especially from significant heights or on hard surfaces, can directly impact the nasal bridge and result in fractures or cartilage displacement.
  • Violence: Physical altercations, such as punches or blunt force trauma to the face, can damage the nasal septum and bridge, ultimately leading to a saddle nose deformity.
  • Previous Nasal Surgeries: In some cases, prior rhinoplasty or nasal surgeries that remove too much cartilage or bone can contribute to a weakened nasal structure.

Signs and Symptoms of Saddle Nose Deformity

Patients with a saddle nose deformity often experience more than just aesthetic concerns. The condition can lead to functional issues such as:

  • Difficulty breathing due to compromised nasal passages
  • Nasal congestion and chronic stuffiness
  • Visible nasal collapse or flattening of the bridge
  • Altered facial symmetry and self-esteem issues

When signs of a saddle nose deformity appear, seeking repair as soon as possible can prevent further complications.

Saddle Nose Repair- Dr. Maurice Khosh: Restoring Shape and Function

Dr. Maurice Khosh offers advanced saddle nose repair techniques to restore the structural integrity and appearance of the nose. Treatment typically involves reconstructive surgery to rebuild the nasal bridge using grafts from the patient’s own cartilage (commonly from the rib or ear) or synthetic implants. The goal of saddle nose repair is to:

  • Restore the natural shape and contour of the nose
  • Improve nasal function and airflow
  • Enhance overall facial aesthetics and symmetry

According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, nasal fractures account for nearly 40% of all facial fractures, making timely evaluation crucial. Seeking prompt medical attention after trauma can help prevent long-term complications and allow for early intervention to preserve nasal structure.

Saw Dr. Khosh for a fractured nose. He reset my nose beautifully (and with little discomfort to me) and then discussed some of my sinus issues with me upon my follow up visit. Never felt like he was rushing me out and felt very confident in his abilities. I would highly recommend to anyone needing plastic or reconstructive options!

Upon hearing of the overwhelmingly positive experience a friend of mine had in choosing Dr. Khosh as her surgeon, I decided to make an appointment for my own septoplasty/rhinoplasty/turbinate reduction. Although I was slightly skeptical as the praise I had heard seemed a bit hyperbolic, all uncertainty dissipated after meeting the Doctor and his staff. My pre- and post-operative experience was excellent in terms of concerns adequately addressed prior to the surgery and mitigation of any bruising in the convalescent period. Despite my apparent predisposition to rather slower healing, a year after the surgery, my nose looks really pretty and my breathing entirely unobstructed! I highly recommend Dr. Khosh!

AMAZING!!!!!! I had Dr Khosh perform lipo on my chin/neck and my result is unbelievable! Better than I could have expected! I met with a couple of surgeons and the second I met with Dr Khosh I knew he was the one I was going with. He was compassionate and explained every detail of what would take place during the surgery and what to expect during recovery. I even emailed a few times during recovery with various questions and he got right back to me asap which was really comforting! I honestly fully recommend Dr Khosh, he did an amazing job and is an amazing person.
